Welcome to Avalos…Te Recuerdo, a blog celebrating a cherished time in the lives of my family that worked, lived and raised their children in “The Colony” at La Fundición de Avalos and Ciudad Chihuahua.
Built in 1905 by the Guggenheim family on land owned by the Terrazas family, Avalos is located on the eastern side of Ciudad Chihuahua and is immediately recognizable by the old American Smelting and Refining Company (ASARCO) smokestack. In the 1920’s, Avalos was the largest lead smelter in the world.
“The Colony” was a gate-guarded American-style company town and included housing for supervisors and their families, as well a school, hospital, pool and plaza. Segregated housing for workers was outside The Colony.
