Do you have memories of celebrating the Fourth of July in Avalos?
With so many American citizens working for ASARCO in Avalos, American holidays were celebrated wholeheartedly.
From my mother, Florence Wilson Delgado, “The Fourth of July would begin early in the morning with mariachi’s playing. The day would be full of races like the one-legged race, running race, bike races, change-of-clothes race and swim races. Beer would be served for the parents and all the adults. They would have a huge cookout near the pool and people would throw each other into the pool. There would be baseball games for the kids and the parents. Everyone would stay up until late at night. I think this was my favorite holiday.”
This article from the NY Times way back in 1886 talks about Americans celebrating the Fourth of July in Mexico. Not Avalos but close!
