Based on the 1930 Mexico Census, there were 2,761 individuals living in Ávalos, Chihuahua on May 15, 1930. Listed under Quintas de La Fundición de Ávalos, Chihuahua, are the following ASARCO smelter employees, their families and housekeepers. To view the actual census records for the Colony and the Ávalos community, visit my post on July 7, 2009. I’ve proofread what I’ve posted but please let me know if you see something listed that is in error. I will continue to review this census for clues about the population that worked in and around the smelter.
On a side note, today is the birth date of my great-grandmother, Felicitas Martinez de Morris, who lived in Quinta #25 when this census was taken.

My grandfather loved Nena Navarro very much and was a close friend of Emilio Navarro.

Hi Liz, you have my cousin listed here #16, Miguel Vera, his wife Guadalupe E. de Vera and their children. They were married in the 70’s so if this is the list from the 1930’s census then the list is incorrect. My uncle, Miguel Vera, senior did live in Avalos at that time but he was a worker at the plant. Not a doctor. My aunt’s name was Amparo. I was born in Avalos and I’d love to hear from you.
Sincerely,
Robert

The George Kendel listed in the census was born in Galicia, which at the time was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The village where he was born is now in Ukraine.
He emigrated to Canada with his parents and lived in MacNutt, SK, where he met and married his wife, Maria Fuhr. Her family was also from Galicia.
The US border crossing records on FamilySearch give some evidence of the family’s comings and goings over the years, both from Canada to the US and Mexico to the US.
