My great-grandfather, William James Morris, traveled from his home town of Streator, Illinois, USA to work in mining and smelting in Mexico. I’ve often wondered what it was he read or heard that inspired him to travel to a country, whose language and people he did not know. Maybe he saw advertisements like those below from 1900-1910 promising jobs and easy travel in Mexico. I was also intrigued by the ad for sulphuric acid!
